The "ULTIMATE" HaCkAtHoN

The first ever 3-day hackathon in Amrita University's history - data hackathon called "DataHack" was conducted from 22-24 February by Manjush and "The Ruby God " of our college and a GSoCian- Sarup, both from IIIrd year CSE dept. The best part of this Hackathon was,it was informal-no teachers, no permissions, free to roam anywhere and think think think a lot.

Day 1(22nd February) started with a Tech{know}logy club meet-up under a tree near Saraswati Statue at 10 a.m, surrounded by the beautiful Amrita Campus environment. Initially there were a few lot of people, but slowly and steadily the amount increased and reached upto 14 people. Manjush and Sarup introduced us to what a hackathon is, what is data analysis, what BigData is and many more things. After the introduction, we were separated into groups of 5 and we were given a task to think of an idea wherein we can use concepts data analysis. We were supposed to come up with anything- a mobile app or a web app or anything, worth useful and creative. And there started the thinking process of young minds. We were given freedom to think about our idea anywhere around the campus- in canteen or in garden or in library or  while roaming- in short no restrictions at all. And there we were on our way to do something new, which we have never done before, with full of enthusiasm and energy and with a hope that we will make something new in these 3 days. By evening all of us were ready with our innovative ideas and were ready to pitch them up. Some came out with 5 ideas, some restricted themselves to 1, but interesting. After sharing and discussing ideas, it was 7:30 in evening, all ready to leave for their hostels, little tired,so much happy that they have actually done an appreciative work and awaiting for the next day to come as fast as possible so that they can work on the ideas which they have build. As a whole the first day was awesome...lots of enjoyment and loads of brainstorming !!! Day 2(23rd February) again started at the same location and same time, with people actually working on their ideas. All of us were confused among our ideas- what to choose, how to implement them.It was a wonderful learning experience with all as a whole. For our applications to come into existence, we needed to learn a lot of stuffs such as PHP , SQL , Ruby on Rails , Javascript and what not. We were getting ourselves introduced to new terms such as API's, new apps such as PhoneGap etc.Even the organizers of the event were so happy to see such an impressive response by us that they also started helping us,sitting along with us helping us to get through the problems faced by us. Even when we were giving a single call to them, they were right away present to help us. Heartily thanks to them for their support. It was 3 in afternoon and all of us were in library. Sambhav and group took up their cameras started taking views from people, related to their idea in library, which was another funny, a kitkat break sort of moment.Their were also other enjoyable moments-sharing ideas and progress, you have done in order to execute your idea, with those to whom you never talked before, discussions, making new friends and lots more. Finally by evening, it was the time to show our progress to the organizers. Here we were little sad that we were not able to make something but atleast we had this happy feeling that we learnt a lot in this course of time and a little hope that we have one more day to go to reach our goal. For this to happen we did not stop. As soon as coming back to hostel,we started exploring more related to our idea so as to implement our idea as soon as possible. Really that day we got to know the real power of Google search engine !!! And another day goes...

Day 3(24th February): And here comes the final day- "The Battle Day". All of us were so busily involved in our work, with full of spirit to show that we can really do something !! Yehh !! Time passed like that and it was 2 in afternoon and there comes the final moment- to showcase our work,(not fully done, but yeah some part of it) prepared with our presentations. And where we presented it? Guess.. In lab, or some hall or some other place ??? And the answer is a BIG NO... We presented near the entrance of the IT Block. Amazing na ?? We invited Jevitha Mam, from CSE dept to see our work. All of us, sitting on ground with her. And she was also one among us. We did not feel like she is some faculty, who is now going to judge us or how normally all faculties behave. She was so friendly, she was different. She got shocked to see such a great participation, a huge amount from IInd year batch. So, by 2:30 p.m we started our presentations and she was really impressed by our ideas and whatever work we did in these 3 days. Some suggestions also came from audience side which were worth to be incorporated in our project. And now all want us to build these apps as soon as possible so that they get benefitted by those as early as possible. That makes you feel great,on top of the world feeling - that your work is in demand. Finally the event ended up with a talk delivered by Sarup, which he is going to deliver at Fossasia conference at Combodia- on how contribution to open source projects can change your life and how one can get started to these. And then finally, say it luck or whatever , there was screening of "Gravity" in our college, which added some more fun to the day.

And this is how the three day "THE ULTIMATE HACKATHON" got over.

But really it was a very good learning experience. We, who did not know anything about what data analysis is, were actually talking about BigData, API's and what not. It was really an amazing experience to develop new things without having any prior knowledge on the concepts behind their implementation and that all this not in any lab or hall, in garden, under the tree, in canteen and where not , without proper internet connection and in a such a short span of time. But still it was fun-made new friends and loads of talks and discussions. I thank Manjush and Sarup for conducting and organizing such a wonderful event, which actually showed us that we are actually capable to do some creative stuff !!!
